Treatment Approach

In my practice, I work with the whole person and take an integrated view of clients' life experience and needs. I offer an authentic understanding of diversity issues - how cultural history, racial and ethnic identity, socio-economic experience, gender and sexual orientation, neurological and processing differences, religious upbringing, spiritual pursuits, and other core factors can affect an individual’s development and treatment priorities.

I have extensive experience in the field of addiction treatment, including alcohol, drugs, food, sex, pornography, internet, and compulsive gambling. I am trained to recognize the relationship between Post- (or Present-) Traumatic Stress (PTSD), Complex Trauma, and the activation of addiction. I utilize 12-Step Programs, SMART Recovery, Trauma Informed Yoga, and other resources.

I favor a systems approach to treatment. Family of origin experiences are repeated within the dynamics that play out in current family units, personal relationships, and places of work. I weave together the early life theory of Freud, the Inner Child work of John Bradshaw, re-parenting solutions offered by the 12-Step program ACoA (Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families), the relational aspects of Harville Hendrix’s Imago couples theory, and the forming of secure bonds developed by Dr. Sue Johnson.

I evaluate potential processing disorders when working with individuals and families, and provide psychoeducation about neurological differences when needed. I appreciate the close relationship between an individual’s learning profile, self-esteem, and personal and professional success, and understand that academic/professional, social, emotional, life skills, and family functioning are keenly interrelated.

I specialize in families, couples, and individuals with neurodiversity issues such as high-functioning autism, Aspergers, NVDL and ADHD, and treat family-of-origin, trauma, and addiction issues that often accompany those primary concerns. I work from a strengths-based perspective, and prefer to use the term “Differences” over labels such as “Disorder” or “Disability.”

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and a Certified School Counselor. I have served a lifelong interest in improving the lives of others throughout my career, working with clients in therapeutic, educational, social, artistic and residential settings.

My services are available in both English and Spanish.
